This is my first week doing a write-up on a setlist and I wish I had taken notes as I built the playlist, but I’ll grow for next time. This week’s tracks were mostly pulled from my, far-too large, and definitely in charge ‘-2play’ playlist. This private playlist is almost 2 years worth of music I have discovered and hoped to play on air, but with new releases almost every week, a lot of tracks get stuck there.
The set opened with Two Voices by The Kimba Unit, a group that overlaps with the Etiopiques or is a rip of their work. Spotify’s publishing system makes it difficult to tell if I am playing original work, especially on tracks with under 10,000 listeners, it’s like the wild-west.
I transitioned this track into a variety of Japanese jazz fusion songs, a subgenre I am overdue to dedicate an entire show to. I used the piano ballad style from those tracks to mix in Somewhere in the Middle by NIJI which I believe is a highlight of this set.
Nubya Garcia is the new sound I like to hear in jazz today and Berlioz is great as well, I just have some personal beef with Berlioz fans. I cannot discount the man’s work any longer so I felt called to include it with this week’s tracks.
I then threw things into 3rd gear and closed the set out with some jazz-hip-hop fusion I have been digging lately, Benny the Butcher delivered in his feature with Stalley and the whole new album by Stalley is spectacular. Finally, I spun some Arabic rap a subgenre I have honestly overlooked, but Fadi Ammous and Figub Brazlevic bring a thrilling sound, with some jazzier production.
The title for these articles will kinda look like barcodes, but its the show title, date aired, and episode #. This is a shorter write-up, but anticipate more depth in the future. This is just the start.
